In Battle: Specializing in sword combat, Riku wields a keyblade known as Way to the Dawn. Due to all the sparring with the other kids on Destiny Islands and his ability to learn quickly, he is exceptionally skilled with a sword. Other skills include powers that linger between darkness and light, i.e; Dark Firaga, Cure Potion, Dark Shield, Dark Aura.

Background: Born and raised on Destiny Islands, Riku always longed for excitement and adventure, and in turn had always been a curious boy. He seemed to be fearless, calm and collected for his age, not to mention a talented swordsman and because of this was looked up to by his friends. He was closest to Sora and Kairi and loved nothing more than competing with Sora and trying to win over Kairi's affections. The three of them were inseparable and planned on venturing out to discover new worlds on a raft until their islands were attacked by strange creatures called Heartless one night. When Sora found Riku, he was on the small paopu island, claiming darkness was not to be feared before being swallowed by it. The darkness took him to an unfamiliar, vast area that left him lost and confused, but quickly discovered by a witch named Maleficent. She slowly worked on his mind by telling him he could help Kairi so long as he helped Maleficent. He agreed, but only for that reason and continued to look for Sora. Unfortunately, when he found him, Sora had new friends with him and Maleficent led Riku to believe he abandoned him and Kairi for his new companions. He became more tempted by the darkness as he tried to help Kairi and eventually fell to its poisonous powers, becoming possessed by a spirit who called himself Ansem-- a seeker of darkness. Riku had lost his body but not his heart because of the strength it contained and was left to wander the darkness until King Mickey found him. Sora defeated Ansem, but in order to close the door to darkness, it needed to be shut on both sides. Even though Riku could have left the darkness to be with Sora, he understood that he needed to atone for what he'd done and close the door forever. After that, he traveled through the darkness with King Mickey, got separated... and eventually found himself at Castle Oblivion. Here, he had to face his memories and his past. Riku persevered despite the painful journey he endured; he was reunited with the king again, and it was then that he understood and accepted that he was not darkness, nor was he light. When DiZ, a mysterious man he met in Castle Oblivion, asked him which path he was choosing, dark or light, he said neither. "I'm taking the road to dawn," he told him. It wasn't long after that Riku was separated from the king again and was battling with the darkness of Ansem that slept deep in his heart. He adopted a blindfolded look to hide his eyes and the truth that he couldn't disguise. DiZ found him wandering the darkness and told him there was a way to help Sora, who was in a comatose-like sleep in Twilight Town, and it was through Roxas. In turn, Riku would help him take revenge on Organization XIII. He was willing to make any sacrifice to help and wake up his friend, and after fighting Roxas for the first time, realized that the only way was to wake up the darkness in his heart. When he did, he took on the physical form of Ansem and his strength and power excelled greatly. He handed Roxas over to DiZ, and when asked his name, he simply replied, "Ansem." It was clear then that Riku was ready to live in darkness if that's what it took to wake Sora from his slumber. When Sora awoke, he continued to leave behind clues and help him along the way, although keeping unknown. Sometime during this ordeal, Riku ran into the king once more, who saw what became of him and was made to promise never to tell Sora what happened to him. In the end, it didn't matter, as Kairi discovered Riku when she and Namine were escaping the Castle That Never Was, and revealed him to Sora. DiZ's device to contain the encoding of a heart exploded when Sora and company came upon him, Mickey and Xemnas... and it gave Riku back his original form. He went on to finish off the Organization with Sora. They and Kairi now continue to live on Destiny Islands, leading as normal of lives as people with their sort of past could. Riku continues to keep in contact with King Mickey on a regular basis and even has a job working for him.
